
My mother. Ọgọ ọma — “good in-law.” A whole way of belonging held in two words.
She named me. So she speaks first.
We sat together for three hours and started where everyone starts — with a name. What a mother means when she chooses one. It opened into all the things a name ends up carrying: womanhood, marriage, autonomy, raising children between cultures, holding onto yourself in a place that wasn’t built for you.
I’m not sharing this because it’s mine. I’m sharing it because it’s ours — yours too. None of it only belongs to us. We’re all just trying to figure it out, day by day. The question lives under every name.
